American Beer Styles Course
This badge is awarded to individuals who have successfully completed the Cicerone Certification Program’s American Beer Styles course, which presents a comprehensive view of beer styles, brewing history, and culture found in the United States. It reviews key ingredients, important brewing processes, and the origin of flavors of beers ranging from American lager styles to a variety of experimental, specialty styles.
Badge-holders have demonstrated their knowledge by passing an online assessment testing their ability to:
• Identify the unique ingredients and processes responsible for various flavors found in American beers.
• Describe the history of brewing in the United States, including when and how each of the major modern styles came into being.
• Identify 20 American beer styles based on a description of their flavors and vital statistics (ABV, IBUs, etc.).
• Identify glassware typically used for serving each style of beer.
• Discuss the various specialty categories of beer found in the United States.
